In this book, Alexander Beecroft explores how the earliest poetry in Greece (Homeric epic and lyric) and China (the Canon of Songs) evolved from being local, oral, and anonymous to being textualised, interpreted, and circulated over increasingly wider areas. Beecroft re-examines representations of authorship as found in poetic biographies such as Lives of Homer and the Zuozhuan, and in the works of other philosophical and historical authors like Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Confucius, and Sima Qian. Many of these anecdotes and narratives have long been rejected as spurious or motivated by naïve biographical criticism. Beecroft argues that these texts effectively negotiated the tensions between local and pan-cultural audiences. The figure of the author thus served as a catalyst to a sense of shared cultural identity in both the Greek and Chinese worlds. It also facilitated the emergence of both cultures as the bases for cosmopolitan world orders.

1. Identify Your Pattern

The first thing you'll need to know is what you are looking for. You can identify your pattern by looking on the underside of any piece of china. The manufacturer, pattern name and sometimes a pattern number will be visible. If there are no markings, take a photo.

2. Take Inventory

Next you'll need to take an inventory of what items you need to replace (the number of cups and saucers, soup bowls etc. that you need).

3. Register With A Replacement Service

China replacement services are a great place to start when you are looking for an odd piece to fill out your set. You can find them in the yellow pages, online or in the classified sections of home décor magazines. There are both Canadian and American based replacement service companies. Have your pattern details and inventory list handy when you contact the replacement service. Ask to be put on their mailing list. (Most have websites now so you can do this online.) They will need to know what your pattern is and the items you are looking to replace. If there are no markings, send them a photo. China replacement services can also help you add to your set. The service will also let you know by email or regular mail about any other rare pieces that become available. If you are not in any rush, this is a terrific way to find pieces without too much trouble.

4. Become An Antique Hunter

For some, the thrill of the hunt is half the fun. Let your local antique dealers know what your pattern is and the pieces you are looking for. Check out antique fairs, garage sales or flea markets; you never know what will turn up. This approach works for the antique hunters who have lots of time and patience.

5. Bid At Online Auctions

Ebay is a wonderful source for odd pieces of china. Type your pattern details into the search box and up will pop all the pieces currently up for auction. This technique will appeal to antique seekers who don't have a lot of time or patience. Auctions last no more than 10 days. You can place an early bid, watch the auction and see if you win.

6. Mix and Match

Instead of completing an entire set in a single pattern, consider introducing a second pattern that complements your current pattern. For example, a pattern with green and silver intricate scrollwork can be teamed up with a pattern that has a simple silver band.

This is a series of 3 short videos of a UFO in the sky over Shanghai, China. Sorry I couldn't zoom up anymore, but it was a cheap camera. My wife and I had seen a blimp and lots of kites in the sky earlier in the day, but this was unlike any of them. There was a larger, clearly triangular thing that lit up in a non-sequential pattern of lights like a Simon Says, and a smaller one below it of uncertain shape. As you can see, they were there at night and remained there the next day at about 10 AM when I shot the last video. By the afternoon, though, they had disappeared. Plenty of people must have seen them, but it seems only the foreigner was at all fussed about it. Later on I saw more kinds of kites, including "stepped" kites that hovered at different altitudes and seemed not to move much. This leads me to believe that these were just lit-up kites of some kind. If so, they must have been well-anchored to something. Also, I mention that they "must be huge", but it may be that they were just closer to me than I had originally thought. Anyway, I'm interested in hearing ideas on what these things might be. Hey, it's China (and the Shanghai World Expo was going on), so who knows...
